If you are attending a Halloween party as a couple, the perfect accompaniment to a Sarah Palin costume is a running mate outfit, Senator John McCain.

No matter what your political affiliation, with the U.S. in the grip of election fever, a John McCain or Sarah Palin outfit offers a simple, cheap and topical solution for this year's Halloween outfit.

Whilst a John McCain mask and a suit would suffice the humor is in the details; making fun of politicians’ policies, voting records and characteristics without hitting-below-the-belt. Such examples would be McCain's trademark thumbs-up sign, his constant references to “my friends;” and not knowing how many houses he owned. You could also lay on the fact that he is a “maverick” or make humorous references to “that one", which became a hit after the 2nd presidential candidate debate.

John McCain Mask

Unless you have white hair or a resemblance to Senator McCain then consider a John McCain (vinyl or paper) mask. Vinyl ones are available for around $20 or less. McCain costume online retailers include Amazon, Walmart, Ebay, Spirit Halloween, Buy Costumes, Shindigz and Target. Amazon and eBay currently have the biggest collection of masks. Sarah Palin masks are slightly harder to come by and are priced higher;around $30. The LA Times “Dish Rag” of October 13th 2008, by Elizabeth Snead, calls the Sarah Palin mask "the hottest Halloween mask of 2008."

John McCain Costume

To become a John McCain lookalike you can use a temporary spray to colour your hair white or use a white wig with receding hairline. Comb your hair straight back. For a bit of fun, stuff your cheeks with cotton or something similarly safe, to give you a jowly effect.

To be more authentic, dress in a conservative suit and tie and make a point of carrying a pocketful of change, to play-up the “change” theme. You could also carry 7 sets of keys – the key to all the McCain homes. If accompanying Sarah Palin then it’s possible to make a homemade badge or lapel pin with slogans such as “I’m with that one.” For added humor you could wear a picture of George Bush or carry a George Bush doll.

Group Halloween Costumes

If going as a group then the general political theme lends itself to Obama and Biden costumes (and even George Bush) as well as Sarah Palin. For a bigger group think about including Hilary or Bill Clinton. Masks are available for all these politicians. Due to the intense interest in Governor Palin, her background and her fashion sense, there are several alternative themes for fun Palin costumes.

McCain and Obama’s Own Halloween Costumes

Referring to their separate appearances on Nickelodeon, the Chicago Sun Times of October 10 “ Obama and McCain Agree on Something,” reported that both the presidential candidates, on recounting their youth, said their favorite Halloween costume was that of a pirate. The newspaper refered to Obama reminiscing about the pirate sword and "little mustache" he wore when he was 3 years old, calling it "one of the best costumes of all time."

On referring to the U.S. Senate McCain wittily remarked, "When I see the way they behave in the United States Senate, sometimes I wish I could put my costume on and take my sword out or my dagger and get 'em back in line,"
